“It took most of 2016 to restore vitality to the upper end of the Houston real estate market, but we got there, and I believe that is the direct result of a truly diversified local economy,” HAR Chair Cindy Hamann with Heritage Texas Properties said in the release. “Even as energy jobs went away, other industries continued to hire and that has drawn home buyers and renters to our market.”

Even though low energy prices and job cuts continued in 2016, Houston saw the number of single-family homes sold beat its all-time record. For the full year, there were 76,449 homes sold. That’s up 1.3 percent from the previous record of 75,470, which was set in 2014, and up 3 percent from 2015’s total.

Total property sales were up 2.2 percent year over year to 91,520 for all of 2016, and the full-year total dollar volume rose 4.2 percent to $24.5 billion. Those figures were also all-time highs, beating records set in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
