Houston Methodist Hospital named best in Texas by U.S. News & World Report

Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center ranked No. 1 in Houston — and in Texas — for U.S. News & World Report’s 2017-18 rankings, which were unveiled Aug. 8.

Several other Houston hospitals ranked on the “best” list, but none cracked the top 20 list of “Honor Roll” hospitals. Nationally, the Mayo Clinic claimed the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row, followed by Cleveland Clinic at No. 2 and Johns Hopkins Hospital at No. 3.

U.S. News releases the rankings to help patients make more informed health care decisions, the publication said in a news release.

The second-best hospital in Texas is UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, according to U.S. News & World Report. The other Houston hospitals named the best in the Bayou City are: Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

“Being named the best in Texas is a tremendous achievement for our physicians, nurses and employees who give the best of themselves every day to our patients," said Dr. Marc Boom, president and CEO of Houston Methodist, in a statement. “Year after year, this confirms that we are leading medicine, providing our community the highest quality medical care, research and education for almost 100 years.”

Within individual specialties measured, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston ranked No. 1 in cancer care in the U.S. Since the survey began in 1990, M.D. Anderson has been named one of the top two cancer hospitals, and it has ranked first 13 times in the last 16 years, according to a statement.

“To consistently be recognized for the quality and compassionate cancer care we provide patients who come to MD Anderson seeking our innovative approaches, world-renowned expertise and decades of experience is a true honor,” said Dr. Marshall Hicks, president ad interim of M.D. Anderson, in a statement.
